Video-EEG monitoring is suitable for patients with frequent and provoked seizures. Long duration EEG recording at least 3 hours (or longer if indicated) with patient video monitoring is performed. Video-EEG monitoring enable epileptologists to register both EEG and patient behavior changes synchronously.
This highly specialized diagnostic examination is used for confirmation of epileptic disorder, assessment of specific seizure pattern, frequency, and precipitating factors and for accurate presurgical localization of epileptic focus.
It has been found that nearly 20% of patients referred for video-EEG because of drug-resistant seizures do not suffer from epilepsy and have so called psychogenic seizures (pseudo-seizures).
Video-EEG monitoring provides a unique diagnostic opportunity for diagnosing pseudo-seizures to help clinicians avoid lifelong unnecessary treatment, which may cause severe adverse effects, and determines their proper managent.
